Is Hamas Pro-Israel?
Is Hamas Pro-Israel?
This question might seem absurd at first. After all, Hamas and Israel have been locked in a bitter conflict for decades. Hamas, the Palestinian militant group governing Gaza, has openly called for the destruction of Israel, while Israel considers Hamas a terrorist organisation. So, how could anyone even ask if Hamas is pro-Israel?
Well, the argument some people make isn’t that Hamas supports Israel but that, in some ways, its actions have indirectly served Israeli interests. Let’s break this down.
1. A Divided Palestinian Front Benefits Israel
One of the biggest advantages for Israel has been the division between Hamas and Fatah (the group that controls the West Bank). Since Hamas seized Gaza in 2007, Palestinians have been politically fractured. A divided Palestinian leadership weakens their negotiating power on the international stage. Some analysts argue that Israel benefits from this division, as it prevents the formation of a unified Palestinian state.
2. A Convenient Enemy?
Hamas’s militant actions—rocket attacks, armed resistance, and hostage situations—give Israel justification for military operations in Gaza. Every time Hamas launches attacks, Israel responds with heavy airstrikes, tightening its control over Palestinian territories. Some even argue that Israel’s government, especially its right-wing factions, use Hamas’s aggression to justify continued occupation and military action.
3. Hamas’s Rise and Alleged Israeli Influence
This might sound like a conspiracy theory, but there have been claims that, in the 1980s, Israel indirectly allowed Hamas to grow as a counterforce to the then-dominant Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO). The logic? A divided Palestinian resistance is easier to manage. While there’s no clear evidence that Israel “created” Hamas, it is documented that Hamas’s early activities were not as strongly opposed by Israel as one might expect.
4. Netanyahu’s Own Words
Israel’s former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been quoted as saying, “Whoever wants to thwart the establishment of a Palestinian state has to support bolstering Hamas and transferring money to Hamas.” This suggests that maintaining Hamas’s power helps Israel justify its policies in Gaza and prevent a unified Palestinian movement.
So, Is Hamas Pro-Israel?
Not in any intentional way. Hamas’s ideology and actions are fundamentally against Israel. However, its presence and strategies have, in some cases, played into Israel’s hands. By keeping Palestinian politics fragmented and justifying military responses, Hamas’s existence ironically aligns with some Israeli strategic interests.
It’s a complex, messy reality—like most things in the Middle East.
